Big Kombucha

This project was about capturing the organic process of making kombucha tea. Yao was inspired by the air bubbles during the brewing process and wanted to reimagine them with bacterial shapes. The book project include 20+ pages of colorful patterns that coordinate with different chapters.
Sketch samples explore different layouts that most successfully mimic the movement of air bubbles as part of the kombucha brewing process.

container gardening issue
The art direction for this special magazine issue comprises of ethereal blooms through the four seasons. The idea was to create coordinating flora that interacts playfully with the type of each section.
Coordinating motifs include swashes and spot washes that are sprinkled throughout the issue.

This editorial project includes new art as well as licensed artworks to express a meditative atmosphere throughout the entire magazine.
